Details About the Cancelled GoldenEye 007

GoldenEye 007, one of the classic productions of the gaming world, was intended to be remastered by Nightdive Studios to be brought back to modern platforms. However, this project could not be realized despite the intensive preparation process. Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick, who spoke to Video Games Chronicle, made remarkable statements about the canceled project. Kick, who said that the process started out promisingly at first, stated that obstacles especially on the Nintendo side prevented the project.

Details About the Cancelled GoldenEye 007

Why Didn’t the GoldenEye 007 Remaster Happen?

According to Stephen Kick, Nightdive Studios had formed a strong team for the GoldenEye 007 remaster project and reached an agreement with MGM/Eon regarding the rights. Stating that this process took about a year, the CEO stated that the real problems were with Nintendo. Kick, who said that Nintendo was reluctant to cooperate with third-party developers, summarized it as “Nintendo would never allow a third party to touch its games.”

Kick had previously mentioned these statements in his tweets in 2022. In his posts at the time, he stated that they had held talks with Nintendo about remastering many classic games, but the company generally backed down on this issue. It is now clearer that GoldenEye 007 is among these projects.

After the remaster idea was canceled, the original N64 version of the game was re-released on the Switch and Xbox platforms with the agreement made between Nintendo, MGM/Eon and Xbox. However, Nightdive Studios’ desire to present this project in the same quality as other successful remaster works such as The Thing could not be realized.

Stephen Kick also stated that they wanted to remaster other classic games such as Eternal Darkness. This game is still limited to the GameCube version only. It is unclear whether Nightdive will return to such projects in the future.

Although the possibility of GoldenEye 007 returning with a modern remaster seems to be out of the question for now, the behind-the-scenes details of this process are quite interesting for those interested in gaming history. In particular, Nintendo’s approach to third-party developers continues to determine the fate of such projects.
