EA Cancels Another Titanfall Project
Layoffs and project cancellations continue to increase in the gaming industry. This time, EA has once again come to the fore with a decision that will upset Titanfall fans. According to the company’s statement, a new Titanfall game developed by Respawn Entertainment has been canceled. The project was terminated while it was still in its early stages, and approximately 100 Respawn employees were laid off.
Titanfall Was Being Developed Under the Codename R7
According to Bloomberg, the canceled project was an extraction shooter developed under the codename R7. This game, planned to take place in the Titanfall universe, aimed to offer a different gameplay to the series, combining giant robots and parkour mechanics. However, the project was stopped at a point defined by Respawn as “early stage incubation” while it was still in the early development phase.
This is not the only project that Respawn has canceled. According to the company’s statement, another early-stage project was canceled earlier in the year, but details about this second production have not yet been made public. With these decisions, EA has decided to direct its resources to series that it sees as more profitable and sustainable, such as Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi.
EA’s downsizing policy has reached remarkable levels recently. The company, which laid off approximately 1,130 people in 2023, lost 5 percent of its total workforce in 2024. It is reported that 300 to 400 positions were affected in this latest wave. Respawn’s statement said, “It is not easy to make these decisions. We are grateful to all of our teammates who were affected. Their creativity and contributions have made Respawn what it is today.”
EA’s new project in the Star Wars universe, Star Wars: Zero Company, is among the rare games that were not affected by the cancellation wave. This new game, which features tactical gameplay similar to XCOM, continues to be one of the company’s priority projects. However, for fans of the Titanfall series, this cancellation is once again a huge disappointment.
