Eidos Montreal Ends 7-Year Wildlands Project
Wildlands is at the center of Eidos Montreal’s recent turbulent period. This cancellation, following layoffs at the studio, directly affects not just a single project, but a development process that has been going on for years. The cancellation, especially at such an advanced stage, is noteworthy.
Wildlands Project Canceled After 7 Years
According to reports, Wildlands had been in development since 2019 and was known internally as P11. It is stated that serious technical and creative problems were experienced throughout the project. The use of four different game engines during development is highlighted as a factor that constantly changed the project’s direction.
In addition, disagreements over the story and constantly changing design decisions further complicated the process. The project’s budget eventually reached hundreds of millions of dollars, leading to the cancellation of other projects within the studio. It’s stated that the previously shelved Deus Ex game was also a result of this process.
According to leaked information, the game was an open-world third-person action-adventure. Players controlled a character named “River” and were part of a group with supernatural powers. The game also featured notable elements such as a mythological creature called “Redheart” that players could ride. However, despite all this content, the project never reached its desired goal.
The most striking detail is that Wildlands was almost complete when it was canceled. It was reportedly in the debugging phase and planned for release later that year. However, it’s stated that Embracer lost confidence in the project and decided that continuing the investment was no longer worthwhile. The reasons behind this decision are not yet clear.
