Everwild Game Officially Cancelled
Everwild, first announced in November 2019, was set to be Rare’s first new franchise since Sea of Thieves. However, the lack of a clear direction for the project for years is cited as the main reason for the cancellation decision. According to the developers who spoke to VGC and Bloomberg, the game’s development process was fraught with problems despite recent reboot attempts.
Uncertainty Dominated Everwild Development
Everwild has been in development for over a decade in various stages. However, the project never took shape in terms of either its gameplay or its overall direction. In February 2025, Xbox boss Phil Spencer stated that “progress” was being made in the game’s development process. However, the news of the cancellation, which came months after this announcement, revealed that Rare had not been able to get the project back on track.
With the cancellation of Everwild, Rare’s first attempt to launch a new brand since Sea of Thieves also failed. This situation brought the difficulties Rare has experienced in developing new projects back to the agenda. The game was planned for Xbox Series, PC and cloud platforms.
The cancellation of Everwild was announced after the large-scale layoffs at Microsoft Gaming. It is stated that the Rare studio was also seriously affected by this process. Some developers working on the project expressed their sadness that years of work had gone to waste in their posts on social media.
While Microsoft has not yet made an official statement on the subject, information from VGC and Bloomberg reveals that the decision has been finalized. It remains unclear how Rare will proceed with its future projects.
