Expedition 33 developers will make their new game according to their own preferences
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 left a strong mark on the gaming world as one of the most unexpected success stories of 2025. Having garnered a large fan base with their first game, the development team is naturally under intense scrutiny for their new projects. However, recent statements from Sandfall Interactive indicate that this attention will not be allowed to overshadow the creative aspect.
Expedition 33 Team Retains Creative Control
François Meurisse, a Sandfall Interactive executive, acknowledged in an interview that they feel some pressure for the new game. Despite this, he specifically emphasized that the team’s priority is not to meet expectations, but to follow their own internal ideas. According to Meurisse, the team is now more experienced, and this experience allows them to take much bolder steps in new projects.
The development team’s perspective isn’t limited to management alone. Lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen acknowledges the growing fan expectations, but emphasizes that the question of “what do we want to see?” is always central to the creative process. She believes trying to please everyone often leads to losing the soul of the work.
This approach is considered a significant factor in Expedition 33’s success. The team didn’t set out to create a huge hit, but rather an experience they enjoyed and found “cool.” The result was a strong response from both critics and players.
Sandfall Interactive may now be under even more scrutiny, but the developers don’t see this attention as a dictating pressure. Instead, they want to preserve the creative spark that made Expedition 33 special. It seems the studio will continue to listen to its instincts rather than take safe choices in its next game.
