Fake Nintendo Lawyer Loses to YouTuber
A YouTuber saved his long-time channel from being shut down by spotting misleading DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) requests sent by a fake Nintendo lawyer. Germany-based YouTuber Dominik “Domtendo” Neumayer took action after he noticed the attacks on his channel, where he posts “Let’s Play” videos of Nintendo games. He was at great risk due to YouTube’s policy of shutting down the channel after three copyright infringements. However, he uncovered the fraud by investigating the fake email addresses and misrepresentations.
Fake Nintendo Lawyer and Misleading Requests
At first, the fake requests claimed to be sent in the name of a Nintendo lawyer. However, Neumayer realized that the requests came from ProtonMail, an encrypted email service. Neumayer contacted the real Nintendo and learned that the emails were not related to the company. Nintendo confirmed that the email address in question did not belong to them and that the content of the requests did not comply with company policies.
Neumayer’s fight didn’t end there. The fake lawyer later retracted his claims, but continued his claims by imitating official Nintendo email addresses. However, Neumayer foiled this attempt by reviewing the email headers and the tools used. With Nintendo’s support, the scam was finally brought to a complete halt.
This incident has once again highlighted how open YouTube’s copyright policies are to abuse. Neumayer argues that YouTube needs to develop a more robust policy to protect its users from false copyright claims. The current system discourages content creators from standing up for their rights and leaves the door open to malicious actors.
