Former Halo Developer Reacts to Campaign Evolved
While Halo: Campaign Evolved aimed to bring a modern touch to the series’ roots, one of the original developers wasn’t keen on the idea. Jaime Griesemer, a designer on the original Halo: Combat Evolved team, reacted strongly, saying the changes made to the new game undermined the original design.
Campaign Evolved Is Losing Halo’s Spirit
The Halo community was divided following the recent announcement of Campaign Evolved. While some players were enthusiastic about the new visuals and gameplay improvements, others felt that the remake lost the essence of the series. The most notable criticism came from Jaime Griesemer, the level designer behind the original game.
Griesemer, in a statement on Twitter, stated that some sections of the new game had been misinterpreted. He specifically stated that the rocks in the “The Silent Cartographer” mission were intentionally placed to prevent players from attacking Hunters with Warthogs. The developer stated that the replacement of these rocks with breakable boxes in the new installment was “unbalanced and pointless,” arguing that this change disrupted the combat experience.
Griesemer also stated that even the addition of a tree to the “WooHoo Jump” landing area disrupted the original flow of the stage. According to the veteran designer, such changes undermine the spirit of the original and the strategic freedom it gave the player.
In the interview, Griesemer added that remake projects are generally “for the sake of making money” and don’t offer creative satisfaction to developers. He harshened his criticism by saying, “Remakes are never complete successes. The spirit of the original is lost, and the new one is never considered good enough.”
While it’s been announced that Halo: Campaign Evolved will be coming to PlayStation, these comments from former team members have further fueled debate ahead of the new game’s release. Master Chief’s return will likely bring as much nostalgia as it will divide opinion.
