Games Containing Loot Boxes will Now Receive PEGI 16 Rating
The European Gaming Authority (PEGI) has announced a significant change for players and parents. Microtransaction systems, and especially loot box mechanics, which are becoming increasingly common in games, will now be more decisive in age ratings. With this new regulation, PEGI is preparing to introduce new rules that will directly change the age limit for some games.
PEGI Changes Loot Box Rules
According to the announcement by PEGI, games containing loot boxes will now receive at least a PEGI 16 rating. Games with paid random reward systems are expected to fall into this category. In some cases, it will be possible for such systems to receive a stricter classification, such as a PEGI 18 rating.
This change could particularly affect titles with a high concentration of microtransaction systems, such as sports games. For example, while the EA Sports FC series currently has a PEGI 3 rating, the rating system may be re-evaluated once the new regulations come into effect.
PEGI is introducing new classifications not only for loot box systems but also for different types of microtransactions. Games featuring in-game purchases, such as paid battle passes, will receive a PEGI 12 rating. Games containing NFT or blockchain-based systems will be placed in the PEGI 18 category.
The new rules don’t stop there. Systems that encourage players to return to the game, such as daily quests, will receive a PEGI 7 rating. However, systems that cause players to lose their progress if they don’t return will receive a higher age rating. PEGI officials have stated that these changes will come into effect as of June 2026.
