GTA 5 File Size Reduced to 2.5 GB, But…
GTA 5 has been one of the games that has strained storage space on PC for years. Even the Legacy version on Steam exceeds 119 GB, yet mod developers have managed to shrink the game to an unbelievable 2.5 GB. Of course, this radical compression process seems like a “miracle,” but the result is quite far from the classic Los Santos experience.
How was GTA 5 squeezed into 2.5 GB?
The experimental project, called “ultra low end mod,” essentially disassembles GTA 5 to minimize its file size. Numerous missions have been completely removed, a large portion of the sound files have been deleted, and map data has been severely trimmed. The goal is to transform the game into a structure that can run on the lowest possible system requirements and to test the limits of compression.
The most striking result of this downsizing is seen on the visual side. 3D models are flattened as if crushed, characters are reduced to a few colored polygon blocks, and environmental details are almost unrecognizable. Buildings appear as gray blocks, while roads and textures constantly load and disappear. Surprisingly, however, the city remains largely intact, and driving is still possible.
Of course, this version stretches the definition of “playable” considerably. Much of the story content is missing, mission variety is almost nonexistent, and the sense of atmosphere is nearly completely lost. Therefore, the mod is more of a technical display than a practical solution.
While far from a realistic alternative for players with storage space issues, the fact that GTA 5 can be downloaded down to 2.5 GB shows how creative and bold the modding world can be. Seeing Los Santos in this state is a strange but equally interesting experience.
