GTA 6 Price Could Change the Gaming World Forever
Developer Michael Douse has stated that the upcoming GTA 6 could shake up the gaming industry with its price tag and completely change the game pricing trend. Game pricing has been a big topic of discussion in recent years, especially with next-gen games starting to be priced around $70. Looking back to the late 90s, game prices hovered between 50-60 dollars on Xbox, N64 and PlayStation platforms, and despite the exponential increase in production costs, these prices did not show a big increase for a long time.
GTA 6 Price and the Future of the Game Industry
But that could change with the release of GTA VI. Douse, the editorial director of Baldur’s Gate 3, suggests that Rockstar Games could charge much more than $70, and that this price could set a new standard for how games are priced in the future. “Almost all games should be more expensive at a base level because the cost of producing them (e.g. inflation) outpaces price trends,” he said on Twitter.
This statement coincides with criticism that many games are released in “top-tier editions” with unfinished content, and that high prices are charged for these editions. “I think a game should be priced according to its quality, breadth and depth,” Douse said.
As for GTA VI, rumor has it that this new Grand Theft Auto game cost around 1 billion dollars to make. Given such a high budget, even a $70 price tag could easily cover this cost. However, Rockstar Games and Take-Two may want to consider a higher price tag to do justice to the investment and the talent of the team.
Finally, Douse said, “All games should be more expensive on a fundamental level,” before adding, “I don’t think we’ll get there with promises of DLC, more with quality and communication. Everyone is just waiting for GTA VI to do that lol”, he concluded. And if any game is going to be released with a higher price and be accepted by gamers, it will definitely be GTA VI.
