GTA V Liberty City Mode Shut Down by Rockstar
The GTA V Liberty City Preservation Project was a mod that brought the iconic Liberty City map from GTA IV to GTA V. The mod, which was released last January after six years of development, was offered to players for free. The mod worked on the GTA V and FiveM platforms, allowing players to explore Liberty City with updated graphics. However, due to Rockstar Games’ intervention, the project’s development and distribution were halted.
Why Did Rockstar Decide to Close the GTA V Liberty City Mod?
The mod’s developer team, World Travel, announced on Discord that they decided to end the project after communicating with Rockstar Games. The team thanked the intense interest in the project and stated that they would continue their passion for the Grand Theft Auto series with different mod projects.
This has brought Rockstar and its parent company Take-Two Interactive’s stance against community-developed projects back into the spotlight. Many similar mods have been shut down for legal reasons before. The closure of the Liberty City Preservation Project has garnered a huge backlash from fans on social media.
This mod, which players see as “GTA IV Remastered,” has strengthened the community’s demand for an official remaster from Rockstar. Despite the closure of the Liberty City Preservation Project, GTA V’s popularity has not diminished. The game was the fifth best-selling game in Europe in 2024, while also being the most-watched game on live streaming platforms last year.
Although the World Travel team announced that they will continue their modding efforts, Liberty City’s return to GTA V seems to be over for now. Let’s see how Rockstar responds to this community’s reactions.
