Has EA Shelved the Need for Speed Series?

While news of the long-awaited new game for Need for Speed fans hasn’t arrived, a concerning development has emerged regarding the series’ future. A well-known photojournalist on the SpeedHunters platform claimed that EA has shelved the Need for Speed series for the time being, and that this decision has led to the platform’s closure.

Is the Need for Speed Series Really Idle?

Matthew Everingham, a writer for SpeedHunters and known for his content on automotive culture, stated on his Instagram account that EA has “isolated” the Need for Speed series. Everingham stated that this situation has also ended support for the site. “SpeedHunters has been suspended. It has shelved EANeed for Speed, and that means the site’s funding has been cut,” he said.

While EA has yet to officially announce anything on the matter, the recent lack of significant developments regarding the series reinforces these claims. SpeedHunters’ weeks of silence and lack of content, in particular, hasn’t gone unnoticed by fans, sparking discussions like “Is SpeedHunters dead?”

Another striking detail is Criterion Games’ announcement in February 2025 that it was directed towards the Battlefield series. With Criterion, the developer of Need for Speed Unbound, taking on this new role, it was thought that the racing series would be put on the back burner.

This claim, coming solely from Matthew Everingham, has not yet been confirmed. However, the prolonged silence on the Need for Speed front and the status of SpeedHunters reinforces the view that EA has put the series on hold for the time being.
