ID Software may return to the Quake series
Quake, which played a major role in shaping the FPS genre, hasn’t been in the news with a new main game for a long time. The series’ presence in recent years has been mostly limited to remastered versions and spin-off projects. However, recent reports suggest this silence may soon be broken. ID Software’s recent success, in particular, strengthens the possibility of a new chapter for Quake.
Quake Return on the Table for ID Software
A report shared by Windows Central, focusing on Xbox’s 2026 plans, claims that ID Software could return to the Quake or Hexen series. Microsoft’s ownership of the rights to both brands makes this possibility even more realistic. Although there’s no official announcement yet, rumors suggest these projects could be unveiled at various events.
One of the strongest candidates for a possible announcement is Bethesda’s traditional event, QuakeCon. However, if the project is planned as a large-scale comeback, it wouldn’t be surprising if it were unveiled at a more widely acclaimed venue like the Xbox Showcase. Still, it’s important to remember that all this information is currently just rumors and should be approached with caution.
The last new Quake game was Quake Champions, released in 2022. On the Hexen side, the main series has been silent since Hexen 2 in 1997. While updated versions of classic games in the series have been released in recent years, a brand new main game hasn’t arrived in almost thirty years.
On the other hand, ID Software recently had one of its biggest breakthroughs with Doom: The Dark Ages. This success has strengthened the studio’s hand in terms of new projects. Putting all this together, the possibility of a Quake series return seems much stronger than before.
