In the Last of Us Universe, Ellie May Not Be the Only Immune
For years, the biggest factor that made Ellie special in The Last of Us universe was that she was the only known person immune to the fungal infection. What made Joel’s difficult decision in the first game so tragic was that Ellie’s sacrifice was seen as humanity’s only salvation. However, behind-the-scenes information shared by a former Naughty Dog employee suggests that this story may actually be based on a much different foundation than we thought.
The Immunity Debate in The Last of Us Universe
Gabriel Betancourt, a former Naughty Dog artist, recounted a remarkable conversation he had with Neil Druckmann during a broadcast. According to Betancourt, Druckmann mentioned that Ellie wasn’t the only one immune in the universe, and that there was actually a whole group of people with this immunity. If this becomes a reality, it could be a harbinger of a very different community that we might encounter in the future of the series.
On the other hand, the fact that Betancourt left the studio a long time ago raises the possibility that this information may have remained only an idea. While many scenarios were considered and later shelved during development, the idea of an immune community may still be on the table for the future of The Last of Us series. This possibility has already sparked a major debate, as it could diminish Ellie’s unique importance in the story.
A large portion of players want the weight of Joel’s great sacrifice at the end of the first game to be preserved. If there are other immune groups around, the death of the Firefly doctors and Ellie’s rescue could lose its emotional impact. Because if Ellie is no longer the only option, Joel’s choice, made against the whole world, risks becoming merely a personal preference.
Neil Druckmann’s statements last year suggested that scientists could have developed a cure if Joel hadn’t intervened. Considering this new immunity claim, we see that Naughty Dog is tending to clarify ambiguities in the universe. Whether we will actually encounter this immune community in the world of The Last of Us will be determined by time and official announcements from the studio.
