Warner Bros. has officially chosen the director for the long-awaited I Am Legend 2 project. Steven Caple Jr., known for his work on Creed II and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, will direct the film, starring Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan. The project, which has been in development since 2022, has officially gained momentum with Caple Jr.’s involvement; his past working relationship with Michael B. Jordan also raises expectations for the film’s quality.

A Radical Change in the I Am Legend 2 Story

The most striking feature of the sequel is that it will be based not on the theatrical ending of the first film, but on the “alternative ending” from the DVD version. In the theatrical version, Robert Neville, played by Will Smith, sacrificed himself; however, in the alternative ending, it is revealed that those infected were not mindless monsters, and Neville survived. This approach, much closer to Richard Matheson’s original novel, lays a solid foundation for how Neville’s story will continue decades later.

In this new order, where humanity is no longer the “first tenant” of the world, how the ecosystem changes and Robert Neville’s role in this new world will form the main theme of the film. The aim is to portray nature’s reclaiming of cities in a way that is both terrifying and aesthetically pleasing.

Although an official release date has not yet been set, the confirmation of the director and the clarification of screenplay details indicate that the filming schedule is approaching. How Michael B. Jordan’s character will connect with Neville remains a secret for now. The collaboration of these two giants of the industry signals that we will be watching not only an action film but also a character-driven survival drama.
