New Dungeons and Dragons Game Cancelled
A project planned to bring a new game to the Dungeons and Dragons universe has been unexpectedly canceled. The game, developed by Starbreeze, was initially announced in 2023 and targeted for release in 2026. However, after a strategic review, the company decided to shift its resources elsewhere.
Starbreeze Abandons Dungeons and Dragons Project
Starbreeze, known for its Payday series, stated that the cancellation was a “difficult but necessary” decision. While the company had planned a community-focused, long-term service model for the game, after a strategic review, it decided it was more prudent to focus its investments on the Payday brand. The cancellation will result in a loss of approximately SEK 255 million.
CEO Adolf Kristjansson clearly outlined the reasoning behind the decision. He believes Payday continues to hold unparalleled potential in the gaming world and is positioned to secure the company’s long-term future. Therefore, human resources and investment will be directed towards expanding the series. Kristjansson emphasized that this move represents an opportunity to offer players more content and continuous updates.
With the cancellation of the Dungeons and Dragons game codenamed Baxter, some of the team will be reassigned to other company projects. It’s reported that this shift will be particularly acute for the teams working on Payday. However, approximately 44 employees and contractors are still on the agenda. Starbreeze announced that it will provide support to the affected players to find new employment opportunities.
The company’s focus remains on growing the Payday series. The series, which has reached over 50 million players, has generated approximately SEK 4 billion in revenue to date. The goal is to solidify Payday’s position as a leader in the heist genre with more frequent updates, new content packs, and expansions to various platforms in the future. This clearly shows that Starbreeze prefers to invest in its own strong brand rather than Dungeons and Dragons.
