Oblivion Remastered Causes Controversy Over Censorship
Oblivion Remastered, a remake of the classic RPG, has been praised for its faithfulness to the original, but a small scene change has become a trending topic on social media. A detail in one of the Dark Brotherhood missions was changed, leading some players to argue that the decision weakened the meaning of the scene.
Changes in Oblivion Remastered Divide Players
Players may remember the scene where Lucien Lachance met his painful end. In the original Oblivion game, the character’s body was naked and covered in torture marks. However, a small detail noticed in this scene in Oblivion Remastered has sparked a huge debate: Lucien is now wearing underwear. This censorship, many players say, diminishes the emotional impact of the scene.
Posts on Reddit argue that the change weakens the atmosphere it was intended to create. It was commented that this visual censorship, especially in the scene where Lucien is betrayed and brutally punished, contradicted the dark tone of the Dark Brotherhood story. One user stated that this intervention trivialized a moment that should have shocked the player.
Although Oblivion Remastered gained a modern look with Unreal Engine 5, it is based on the original Creation Engine. Thanks to this, the bugs and oddities of the old version are preserved. However, some systems were changed. While the leveling system was renewed, the first-person perspective on horseback was removed. The censorship in the Lucien scene stood out as a content revision, not a technical one.
While the remaster developed by Virtuos received generally positive reviews, it remains unclear why such minor changes were made. While some players think this touch is unnecessary, some argue that it may have been a conscious choice made to present the game to a wider audience. However, one thing is clear: Lucien Lachance’s scene seems to continue to be talked about.
