Old Star Wars Game Brings Down New One

Games set in the Star Wars universe have always attracted great attention. However, Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws, released in 2024, failed to meet expectations in European sales and fell behind Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, released in 2023. Outlaws, which stands out with its open-world structure, was only able to rank 47th on the list of best-selling games of the year. This situation caused a great disappointment at a time when Ubisoft was going through a difficult financial period.

Why Did Star Wars Outlaws Fail?

Star Wars Outlaws had great potential as Ubisoft’s first open-world Star Wars game. The game, which promised to offer players the opportunity to freely explore a huge universe, was criticized for technical issues and insufficient storytelling. The game, released in August 2024, had a limited sales period. Jedi: Survivor, on the other hand, remained on the market throughout the year and managed to increase its sales thanks to the re-release made for older-generation consoles.

The reason behind Outlaws’ sales failure is that Ubisoft has not been innovative enough on the game and has not met player expectations. While Jedi: Survivor stands out with its story depth and character development, Outlaws’ main character and story were considered forgettable by players.

Ubisoft has experienced many major project disappointments in recent years. The failure of Outlaws further increased the company’s financial difficulties. On the other hand, such low sales figures despite the strength of the Star Wars brand have reignited discussions about gamers’ waning interest in the franchise.
