Open Source Game Engine Godot 4.4 Updated
Open source game engine Godot has announced version 4.4. This update includes many innovations such as the integration of the Jolt physics engine, .NET 8 support, and improved editor usability. Godot 4.4, which has been shaped by nearly 3,000 commits, offers significant improvements for both beginners and experienced developers.
Innovations Coming with Godot 4.4
One of the most striking features of Godot 4.4 is that the Jolt physics engine is now a part of the engine. This system, which was previously used as a plug-in, provides a more fluid and precise experience, especially in 3D physics operations. However, this new engine is not active by default. In addition, the 3D physics interpolation feature is now available. This system reduces shaking in physics-based animations and offers smoother visuals. This feature, which was previously only available for 2D, has now become available in 3D projects.
Godot 4.4 also offers innovations on the editor side to simplify the game development process. The game window can now be embedded within the editor, which is a great convenience especially for developers using a single screen. However, this feature is not currently supported on macOS. There is also an important update for C# users. Godot 4.4 has moved to Microsoft’s long-term supported .NET 8 platform. This offers developers working with C# a more modern infrastructure and expanded features.
Godot 4.4 has been well received by the developer community. Features such as typed dictionaries, physics interpolation and Jolt support were especially appreciated. Project manager Rémi Verschelde stated that this update is “a big step forward in focusing on the user experience and editor workflow.”
