Pokémon Winds and Waves Will be a Switch 2 Exclusive
Pokemon Winds and Waves, shown at the end of the Pokemon Day 2026 presentation, was the first official step towards the long-awaited Gen 10. It was confirmed that the game will be released for Switch 2 in 2027. This naturally raised the question of whether it will come to Switch 1. For now, the clear picture is this: the main series is being built on new hardware, and Game Freak aims for a more ambitious start technically.
Pokemon Winds and Waves Goes to the Next Generation
As we saw in the trailer, Pokemon Winds and Waves offers the most vibrant world in the series to date. Denser vegetation, dynamic environmental designs, and large open spaces are noticeable. This leap is an important message for players who criticized the graphics during the Scarlet and Violet era. The hardware power of the Switch 2 is clearly felt here.
The presentation also showcased new starter Pokémon: Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua. The region name hasn’t been revealed yet, but ocean and tropical themes are prominent. The open-world structure has been confirmed, and the exploration-focused design remains. This shows that Game Freak hasn’t abandoned its core focus from the last generation.
The decision to launch exclusively on Switch 2 seems like a strategic choice. It’s not surprising that Nintendo is supporting its new console with a strong main-series Pokémon game. Also, focusing on a single platform instead of simultaneously running two different pieces of hardware could offer a more controlled development process.
There’s still a long wait for Pokémon Winds and Waves. However, the initial impression is that it’s a fresh start befitting the series’ 30th anniversary. The real question will be how well this technical leap will be supported by gameplay depth.
