Prince of Persia Creator Reacts to Sands of Time Remake
Ubisoft’s cancellation of the Sands of Time Remake, part of its restructuring process, has disappointed not only players but also the series’ creator, Jordan Mechner. In a blog post, Mechner openly and honestly shared his feelings about the cancellation, while also expressing his support for the developers who worked on the project.
Sands of Time Remake Cancellation Saddens Jordan Mechner
Jordan Mechner said he had hoped to celebrate the release of Sands of Time Remake in the new year, but that wasn’t possible. He stated that Ubisoft’s decision to cancel the project was a huge disappointment for him as well as for the fans who had been waiting for it for so long. Mechner emphasized that such decisions mean the end not only of a game but also of years of hard work.
In his statement, Mechner, specifically addressing the development team in Montreal, noted that the cancellation of a game is one of the most painful aspects of the industry. He said that the public often doesn’t see the emotional and professional devastation behind this process, and that such a cancellation can be even more devastating for young developers.
Mechner stated that the fact that a project worked on for four years will never reach players creates strong emotions like “loss” and “grief.” He said that the nights, weekends, and sacrifices made feel even heavier when looked back. According to him, this is one of the unseen but well-known realities of game development.
Despite all this disappointment, Mechner also stated that he remains hopeful about the future of the Prince of Persia series. He said that recent releases like The Lost Crown and The Rogue Prince of Persia show that interest in the series is still strong. According to Mechner, the passionate community behind Prince of Persia is the greatest guarantee that the series will one day reach the level it deserves.
