Remaster Will Break Morrowind, According to Mod Team
The success of Oblivion Remastered has Elder Scrolls fans hoping for a similar remaster for Morrowind. However, the Tamriel Rebuilt team, who have been developing a massive mod for the game for over 20 years, think that modernizing Morrowind would be a misstep. According to them, the “old age” of this classic game is the most important element that makes it special.
Tamriel Rebuilt Team Against Morrowind Remaster
The Tamriel Rebuilt project aims to expand Morrowind’s original map, which was set only on the island of Vvardenfell, and add the entire continent to the game. Team member Cicero told PC Gamer in an interview that he completely agrees with Todd Howard’s statement in 2018 that “I wouldn’t want to remaster Morrowind because it’s a part of its identity because it’s aged.” Although Howard’s view has changed over time, modders continue to share the same opinion.
Cicero says that “modernizing Morrowind would only ruin the game,” arguing that steps such as graphical updates or gameplay tweaks would damage the atmosphere of the game. In his opinion, it is much more reasonable to remaster younger and more technically flexible games like Oblivion. In addition, the release of Oblivion Remastered has also benefited the Tamriel Rebuilt project; the major update called “Grasping Fortune” reached more players with this wave of interest.
The creature animator nicknamed Grumbling Vomit emphasized that their main priority is to complete Tamriel Rebuilt, saying, “I think more people should experience Morrowind, but not for the sake of ‘prettier pixels’.” This update adds a large area to the game, including Narsis, the capital of House Hlaalu, and is estimated to be completed by 2035.
The Tamriel Rebuilt team advocates preserving and expanding the original structure instead of technical innovations. According to them, Morrowind’s unique atmosphere and detailed universe offer an experience beyond graphics. This is a legacy that can be kept alive with loyal mod projects, not with remaster expectations.
