Saints Row 5 Plans Make You Wish They Had Been Made

For years, the Saints Row series has stood out among games like GTA with its distinct style. However, the reboot attempt fell short of fan expectations. Now, emerging information suggests that Saints Row 5 could actually be a much more ambitious project.

Saints Row 5’s Missed Opportunities

Early plans, learned of when YouTuber mrsaintsgodzilla21 visited Volition studios in 2019, excited fans. At the time, the project, introduced as “Saints Row Cinco” in presentations, featured entirely new characters but also planned to feature the return of Pierce, a veteran character. Even the actor’s voice acting was completed. This detail suggests that the game was initially intended as a continuation of the series rather than a full reboot.

The aim was to create a structure closer to Saints Row 2 in tone, but incorporating the more exaggerated scenes of Saints Row The Third. This would both remain true to the series’ roots and maintain the humor sought in modern games. Unfortunately, these ideas were shelved, and the reboot evolved in a very different direction.

Saints Row 5’s planned open world was also going to be much deeper. Player-owned businesses would directly impact the city; for example, owning a waste company would cause NPCs to mutate. It would even be possible to change NPC behavior by enacting laws in districts. These details would ensure that the gameplay wasn’t limited to quests but rather a world-shaping experience.

Another feature that was cut was the human shield mechanic. Publisher Deep Silver vetoed this feature due to the game’s level of violence. A creative idea that allowed players to record NPC voices and use them in their friends’ games was also cancelled. Memory constraints and technical difficulties prevented many innovations from being implemented in the game. All this information suggests that the planned version of Saints Row 5 could actually be a much richer and more original experience.
