Scientists Develop Device That Lets You Enjoy Games

Scientists have developed a device that stimulates the sense of taste during games. This device, called e-Taste, is placed on the user’s lower teeth and delivers different tastes to the mouth in response to signals given remotely. The device can deliver basic tastes such as salty, sour, sweet, bitter and umami through chemical compounds. This innovative technology can be used in many areas from video games to online shopping.

The device uses chemicals in a gel form to deliver appropriate tastes to different areas of the tongue. For example, sodium chloride (NaCl) is used for salty tastes, citric acid for sour tastes, glucose for sweetness, magnesium chloride (MgCl2) for bitterness and glutamate for umami taste. These chemicals are delivered via a tab that extends from a small device to the tongue. An electromagnetic pump controls the intensity and type of tastes and enables the device to work.

Researchers state that the device is both safe and durable. The device, which is placed between users’ teeth, is not damaged by physical behaviors such as biting. In addition, the intensity and combinations of flavors can be adjusted specifically for the user.

e-Taste has great potential, especially for video games. Researchers state that the device can provide users with a more realistic experience in the virtual world. For example, it may be possible to taste a chocolate or taste a virtual meal during a game.

In addition, it is thought that it can be used in areas such as tasting products in online shopping, providing sensory experiences in distance education and weight management. The device worked successfully in tests conducted with 16 people and was able to transmit even complex taste combinations. Scientists state that this technology could open a new door for virtual and augmented reality applications. Games and other digital experiences can become more interactive than ever before thanks to this device.
