Sega Takes Legal Action Against Social Media User
Video game developer Sega has taken legal action against an abusive social media user. The Japanese company has previously acknowledged that it receives its fair share of negative comments, even admitting that one of its developers was recently subjected to a defamatory attack. While the company has stated that it sincerely values the feedback of its massive player base, whether in the form of praise or criticism, the studio has taken a stand against what it sees as excessive harassment of a staff member.
Sega’s Tough Stance on Harassment
While not representative of all gamers, a minority of troublemakers have caused their share of controversy. Developers, publishers and even voice actors have received threatening emails from angry gamers on more than one occasion. Just this year, the developers of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 talked about their experiences with online harassment, leading one community manager to criticize harmful users for sending death threats to the people behind the game.
Famous video game developer Sega took things a step further by officially taking an allegedly toxic fan to court. The company recently announced that it had taken legal action against an individual who reportedly posted slanderous and defamatory comments online about a Sega employee. Sega declined to reveal the identity of the person in question, but said it had reached a settlement that forced the offender to pay damages to the employee in question.
Sega reiterated that it takes threats against its employees seriously, whether physical or mental, and warned potential offenders that it stands ready to take action under its Customer Harassment Policy if necessary. It also thanked fans for their continued support and promised to aim to exceed expectations in future projects.
