Sony May Be Working on Native PS3 Backward Compatibility

According to recent claims by a reputable insider, Sony may be working on a solution to make the PS3 backward compatibility feature natively playable on PS5 consoles. The PS5’s lack of backwards compatibility has been the subject of constant criticism, especially since most games from previous PlayStation generations (excluding the PS4 era) are not playable on the PS5. But if this rumor is true, Sony could fix this major flaw by providing native support for PS3 games on the PS5.

Local Support Coming With PS3 Backward Compatibility?

Although Sony occasionally adds older PlayStation games to the PS Plus Premium Classics Catalog, the PS5’s backwards compatibility still falls short. The vast majority of PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP and PS Vita games are not playable on modern PlayStation platforms. These classic games are only available digitally and original physical copies are not supported on PS5. Furthermore, PS3 games are only available via cloud streaming, which requires players to be constantly connected to the internet.

While PlayStation owners won’t be able to plug PS2 discs into their PS5s and run them anytime soon, they will soon be able to play PS3 games on Sony’s modern consoles without having to stream them over the cloud. In the latest episode of the XboxEra podcast, respected leaker Shpeshal_Nick claimed that Sony is planning to make PS3 games natively playable on the PS5. According to Shpeshal_Nick, his sources said that “Sony is working on specific PlayStation 3 backwards compatibility for the PS5.”

Selective PS3 Backward Compatibility

The word “select” suggests that Sony will hand-pick some PS3 games to make them playable on the PS5, similar to what Microsoft is doing with backwards compatible games on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. During the podcast, a chat member brought up the idea that PS3 games could have their frame rates and resolutions increased on PS5. However, Shpeshal_Nick stated that he wasn’t entirely sure of the details.
