Sony Shows Off New AI Tech with Horizon’s Aloy

Sony has introduced its new artificial intelligence (AI) technology using Aloy, the main character of Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West. A video the company released on YouTube showed how an AI-powered version of Aloy works. In this introduction, many details from Aloy’s facial animations to her voice responses showcased Sony’s advanced AI capabilities. However, the video was soon removed from the platform due to copyright.

Sony Shows Off New AI Tech with Horizon's Aloy

Aloy and New AI Technology Details

In the video, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s software engineering director Sharwin Raghoebardajal had a real-time conversation with the AI-powered Aloy. Raghoebardajal asked Aloy about Horizon’s story, and the character shared details about her past. For example, the expressions Aloy used to explain her status as a “clone” were presented faithfully to the story in the game.

Aloy responded with statements like, “Being a clone connects me to the past while allowing me to create my own path and future.” In the later parts of the video, the conversations transitioned to the game world of Horizon Forbidden West, where Aloy introduced one of the game’s locations, The Scalding Spear.

Thanks to AI technology, Aloy’s facial animations and voice responses were created in real time. However, one thing that stands out is that Aloy’s voice does not resemble Ashly Burch, who voices the character. This situation has brought up ethical discussions about AI voice acting in video games. Ashly Burch has previously sought protections regarding the impact of AI technologies on voice actors.

Sony’s promotional video was removed from YouTube shortly after due to a copyright claim filed by Muso TNT Ltd. Although it is not fully explained why the video was removed, it is believed that the content was published without authorization. You can access the removed video by clicking this link. Sony’s new AI technology looks set to spark significant discussions in the gaming world, both technically and ethically. This new version of Aloy hints at how game characters will evolve in the future.
