However, this time he’s in the spotlight not for the characters he created or the legacy he left to popular culture, but for a rather controversial AI deal. Stan Lee’s voice and appearance have been included in ElevenLabs’ platform, which aims to digitally recreate famous personalities using artificial intelligence.
ElevenLabs Sparks Controversy with Stan Lee Project
ElevenLabs, an AI-powered voice synthesis company, will be able to digitally reuse Stan Lee’s voice and appearance as part of an agreement with Stan Lee Universe. This agreement was announced as part of the company’s Iconic Marketplace platform. The platform also includes voice and likeness rights for famous names such as Michael Caine, Judy Garland, and David Hasselhoff.
One of the most striking aspects of the agreement is the use of Stan Lee’s voice in new content. ElevenLabs plans to create a monthly series called “Stan Lee Book Club of the Month,” in which an AI-generated voice of Stan Lee will narrate a different book each month. The first book chosen will be Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.
But it doesn’t stop there. Stan Lee’s appearance will also be incorporated into the company’s visual production tools. Users will be able to create comic book panels featuring the late author and comic book legend. While Stan Lee Universe argues that this responds to fans’ desire to hear Lee’s voice again, the issue has sparked serious ethical debates on social media.
At the heart of the controversy is the question of how appropriate it is to reuse AI in content creation for deceased creative figures. Stan Lee passed away in 2018, at a time when these technologies were not as widespread as they are today. Therefore, many fans find it disturbing that his legacy is being turned into a commercial AI product. The argument is clear: technology is advancing, but where the line should be drawn remains unclear.
