Supermassive Games is going through a tough time
Supermassive Games, one of the world’s most prominent independent studios, has recently been in the news for both its internal changes and the postponement of projects. The studio, developer of highly anticipated titles such as “Little Nightmares III” and “Directive 8020,” appears to have entered a difficult period with these developments. The official announcement confirmed new layoffs and postponed the release date of “Directive 8020.”
Directive 8020 Delayed, Supermassive Games Downsizing
According to a statement from Supermassive Games, it will part ways with 36 employees as part of its restructuring process. The company stated that this decision was not made lightly and that it will provide support to all employees. It was announced that this step was taken due to fluctuations in the industry and economic challenges.
Alongside this difficult decision, the studio also announced another important update: The release of the sci-fi/horror-themed game “Directive 8020” has been postponed until the first half of 2026. It was previously stated that the game needed extra time to release in October 2025. The goal is to improve the game’s quality during this time.
The studio also shared some good news to reassure fans. They stated that there are no changes to the development of “Little Nightmares III” and that it is progressing as planned. This means that players will at least be able to see the third installment of this popular series on schedule.
This is the second time Supermassive Games has cut staff in two years. The studio’s ability to maintain stability is being closely watched in the gaming world, especially considering last year’s cancellation of Blade Runner and other layoffs.
