Surprising Statement from Dead Island 2 Developer

Dead Island 2, which has earned a strong place among zombie-themed games, has generated considerable buzz in the gaming world not only for its content but also for its development process. Now, one of the figures behind this lengthy delay has explained why the project was delayed for years and how this decision truly marked a turning point.

The Truth Behind the Dead Island 2 Delay

Although the first trailer for Dead Island 2 was released in 2014, the game wasn’t released until 2023. This long period of changes between development teams almost led to the risk of the game being released in poor condition. Former Deep Silver communications manager Martin Wein made striking statements about this period. Wein stated that the version from that period was “completely detached from the spirit of the original Dead Island.”

According to Wein, the game’s initial development received extremely negative feedback during player testing. Wein described the Yager-developed version as “terrible,” adding that at this point, they decided to halt the project and switch studios. “If it had been released in that state, the brand would have been finished,” he said, emphasizing the magnitude of the risk.

With this decision, Deep Silver transferred the game from Yager to other studios, and it was finally completed by Dambuster Studios in 2023. This uncertain period, which lasted approximately eight years, proved decisive for the game’s future. Wein stated that this decision was not easy at the time, but it was the right one.

Dead Island 2 was both a commercial success and a positive reception from players upon its release. According to Martin Wein, this success was made possible by never giving up on the goal of “creating a game that suits the player.”
