Things haven’t been going well for Highguard for a while now. Player numbers have dropped sharply, and layoffs have been a topic of discussion at developer Wildlight Entertainment. Now, a new detail has emerged that’s stirring up the rumor mill: Tencent may be the main financial backer of the game.

Tencent Turns Out to Be Highguard’s Main Investor

According to Stephen Totilo, the China-based technology giant Tencent is the studio’s “main financial backer.” To be more precise, it’s stated that TiMi Studio Group, under Tencent, is supporting the project as the main studio. Until this information, Highguard’s investors had not been publicly disclosed, and the studio had avoided commenting on the matter in past interviews.

The article also emphasizes that neither Tencent nor Wildlight Entertainment had made an official statement prior to publication. Other media outlets have also not yet responded to requests for comment. This silence, especially considering recent developments, has raised further questions within the community.

Highguard had a strong launch on Steam on January 26th with approximately 100,000 concurrent players. However, this quickly reversed. According to current data, the game has dropped to below 2,000 concurrent players, and Steam reviews are currently mixed.

The involvement of a giant investor like Tencent may be a source of confidence for some players, but it also raises expectations for others. The decline, especially with such significant support, naturally raises the question of “Where did we go wrong?” How Highguard will recover from this situation remains unclear for now.
