The Crimson Desert map will be massive
While Crimson Desert has captivated attention with its grandeur since its first trailers, the main question on players’ minds has always been the same: How big is this world? While the images shared so far have focused mostly on combat and boss battles, the true scale of the open world remained a mystery. New statements from Crimson Desert developers have largely cleared up these questions.
How Big is the World of Crimson Desert?
Will Powers, an official from Pearl Abyss, speaking about Crimson Desert, shared the clearest information yet regarding the game’s map scale. According to Powers, Crimson Desert’s playable area is at least twice the size of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’s open world. In fact, this area is even larger than Red Dead Redemption 2’s map.
However, for the development team, it’s not just about the map’s square footage. Powers specifically emphasizes the significant role vertical exploration plays at this scale. Climbing, flying, and various traversing mechanics allow players to explore the world not only horizontally but also vertically. This approach aims to make the map feel even larger than it is.
The development team underlines that they don’t want to create a “big but empty” world. In Crimson Desert, the goal is to create a living, dynamic, and intriguing environment wherever you go. This points to an open-world concept supported by side activities, characters, and environmental storytelling.
On the story side, there’s a deliberate ambiguity. According to Powers, Crimson Desert will offer an experience where the player forges their own path, rather than imposing the same main story on everyone. The chosen quests, areas explored, and events encountered will allow each player to experience a different story in the world of Pywel. When all these details come together, Crimson Desert will offer not only a large but also a meaningful open world to explore.
