The Don’t Kill the Disc Petition has Surpassed the 100,000 Signature Mark
The backlash against Sony’s announcement that it will end physical disc production for new PlayStation games by 2028 continues to grow. Following protests on social media, the “Don’t Kill the Disc” petition has quickly gained significant support. Gamers are trying to make their voices heard against the complete elimination of the option to buy physical games.
The “Don’t Kill the Disc” Campaign is Growing Rapidly
Launched after Sony’s announcement, the “Don’t Kill the Disc” campaign managed to surpass 100,000 signatures in just four days. The campaign was initiated on Change.org by a representative of the Canadian-based retail platform PnP Games. In addition to signatures, thousands of players supported the campaign by sharing comments and videos.
The campaign text emphasizes that a physical game is more than just a storage device. Players argue that when they own a disc, they can lend it out, sell it secondhand, add it to their collection, or pass it on to future generations. In contrast, it’s argued that boxes containing only download codes don’t offer true ownership, and digital licenses can be revoked if necessary.
Supporters of the campaign believe the issue isn’t simply about preserving game archives. They point out that the physical game market, encompassing retail stores, distribution chains, and the secondhand sector, provides employment for numerous people. A large portion of players say they aren’t entirely against digital games, but they don’t want their right to choose between physical and digital taken away.
The latest update to the campaign revisits Sony’s statements from years ago about providing players with long-term access to their games. Despite this, the company has yet to make an official statement regarding the Don’t Kill the Disc campaign. On the other hand, industry observers suggest that Sony may have long planned this decision and anticipated potential reactions. Nevertheless, the support the campaign has garnered shows that the debate about the future of physical gaming is far from over.
