The End of the Road Seems to be in Sight for The Last of Us

The Last of Us, one of HBO’s most talked-about productions, is back in the spotlight after the controversy surrounding its second season, this time regarding its future. Statements from the show’s creative team and network management suggest that the story is approaching its end in a controlled manner rather than being extended, creating both curiosity and sadness among fans.

When Will The Last of Us End?

Statements made by HBO President Casey Bloys in an interview with Deadline indicate that the possibility of a fourth season for The Last of Us is now quite slim. While Bloys stated that the decision technically rests with the producers, he implied that it is “quite likely” the show will end with its third season. This means that the long-discussed plans for a fourth season may have been shelved.

Interestingly, showrunner Craig Mazin had previously stated openly that four seasons were needed to properly complete the story. Considering the complexity of The Last of Us Part II’s narrative structure, Mazin argued that a third season alone wouldn’t be enough. However, this new tone from HBO suggests a change in plans.

The events of the second season finale reinforce this possibility. It’s clear that after Joel’s death, the focus of the story will shift to Abby, and a large part of the third season is expected to be told from her perspective. While this narrative choice isn’t surprising to those familiar with the game, it created a significant turning point for a large portion of the show’s viewers.

It seems the aim is to conclude The Last of Us with a strong finale, without dragging it out unnecessarily. HBO’s recent tendency to end series on time and the increasing cost pressure may also be influencing this decision. Although there’s no official announcement yet, the third season could be the end of The Last of Us, and fans need to prepare themselves for it.
