The Mortal Kombat Movie Could Bring Back Old Characters

In the Mortal Kombat universe, death often doesn’t mean a definitive end. This, well known to those who follow the games, seems to be used more in the cinematic world. The quick elimination of some beloved characters in the first film saddened players, but new statements indicate that these names haven’t been completely shelved.

Mortal Kombat Characters May Return in Sequels

Ed Boon, one of the creators of Mortal Kombat, stated that it’s quite natural for characters who die in this universe to return. According to Boon, this is precisely the beauty of Mortal Kombat; even if a character dies, they can reappear in the next story. These words open a hopeful door for some characters lost in the first film.

The Mortal Kombat Movie Could Bring Back Old Characters

The 2021 Mortal Kombat film saw the deaths of many characters, including Sub-Zero, Kano, Kung Lao, Goro, Mileena, Kabal, Reiko, Reptile, and Nitara. However, we know that some returns are already being prepared for the sequel. Bi-Han’s return as Noob Saibot, Kung Lao’s revenant appearance, and Kano’s re-emergence suggest the films are embracing the games’ flexible approach to death.

This approach is particularly important for characters with strong fan bases like Mileena. Her introduction without Kitana in the first film and her quick removal from the story was criticized by many viewers. If the sequels dare to reinterpret the characters, these names could return in a much more accurate and satisfying way.

Boon also hints that they won’t be limited to just the old characters. He says he wants to see bigger threats like Shinnok included in the cinematic universe. This suggests that Mortal Kombat films could expand to a broader, more supernatural, and more game-oriented storyline in the future. With the second film in the series, we will see more clearly whether the producers learned anything from the first film.
