The New God of War Game Could Feature Atreus as the Main Character

The last few weeks have been quite eventful for God of War fans. While a remake of the trilogy was announced, the mysterious project being worked on by Santa Monica Studio’s second team has also resurfaced. Many believe this is a new main game, but some rumors suggest that this time the focus might be on Atreus rather than Kratos.

The Claim of an Atreus Spin-Off for God of War is Gaining Strength

According to a theory shared on Reddit, the new project might not be a direct Kratos-centric sequel, but rather an Atreus-focused spin-off. Atreus’s departure for his own journey at the end of Ragnarok clearly showed that his story didn’t end there. In particular, some past statements by Cory Barlog are being interpreted as a conscious move to lay the groundwork for a sequel.

Ragnarok director Eric Williams’s statement that Atreus was deliberately not given melee weapons, and that this was something “deserved,” also fuels this theory. Furthermore, Jason Schreier of Bloomberg’s comment that Barlog’s new project “isn’t a new IP, but it could feel like one” might point to an Atreus-centric game with a different gameplay structure.

The hints that Christopher Judge might be involved in the project don’t completely refute the theory. Kratos not being a main character doesn’t mean he’ll be absent from the story altogether. On the contrary, the father-son dynamic could continue with a more limited but strong role distribution.

Of course, all of this is currently just rumor. However, the idea of a more experimental God of War game focusing on Atreus as Loki could take the series in a different direction. Whether we’re seeing a side story emerging from Kratos’s shadow, or a new main game, we’ll have to wait for the official announcement to find out.
