The Origin of the Name Leon Kennedy Revealed 30 Years Later

Since his introduction to Resident Evil 2, Leon S. Kennedy has become one of the most recognizable faces in the series. Appearing in various games and remake projects over the years, the character’s name has long been a subject of debate among gamers. Now, a statement directly from the developers has put an end to this debate.

Where Does the Name Leon Kennedy Come From?

According to Hideki Kamiya, the name Leon Kennedy does indeed originate from the film Leon: The Professional. This theory, which has circulated among gamers for years, has now been officially confirmed. Frankly, this connection has sounded plausible for a long time, but hearing it directly from the developers takes things to a whole new level.

Another detail that strengthens this theory is the subtle references within the series. In particular, the weapon named “Matilda” in Resident Evil 4 made the connection to the character in the film even more apparent. Although it’s said that the weapon’s name wasn’t directly given by Kamiya, the resulting picture points to a very clear reference.

According to information shared by Kamiya, the name choice also emerged quite naturally. Different names were tried during development, but ultimately, inspired by a film he watched, the suggestion “Leon” was made. This suggestion was accepted, resulting in the iconic name we see today. So, it’s more the product of a momentary inspiration than part of a larger plan.

These kinds of small details once again demonstrate how organically the game development process can progress. The fact that even the name of a character like Leon Kennedy, embraced by players for years, is based on such a simple starting point makes the behind-the-scenes story even more interesting. Sometimes a single idea can be etched into the memory of an entire series.
