Ubisoft has made a remarkable defense against the lawsuits and criticisms filed regarding the game The Crew, which was shut down in 2024. The company stated that players should not expect to own these games indefinitely when purchasing them online. This statement sparked a huge backlash and sparked discussions, especially among users who purchased the game.

The Crew Game Shutdown and Reactions

The Crew was removed from digital stores by Ubisoft in December 2023 and the servers were shut down on March 31, 2024, making it completely unplayable. While players were outraged that the game they purchased had become inaccessible, two players filed a lawsuit against Ubisoft. The plaintiffs argued that the game was not a purchased product, but merely a license that granted access to the servers.

The lawsuit claims that Ubisoft’s physical and digital versions of the game are misleading. It is stated that the game’s packaging in particular creates the impression of long-term access. It also claims that the digital currency used in the game must be valid indefinitely under California law.

Ubisoft argued that players should not expect continuous ownership in such online games. The company’s lawyers stated that the game provides access with a license and that this is clearly stated. However, the plaintiffs are trying to refute this defense by claiming that the game’s activation codes are valid until 2099.

Following the backlash, Ubisoft announced that it will develop offline modes for The Crew 2 and The Crew Motorfest. The company stated that these new modes will provide long-term access. However, players consider Ubisoft’s move as a late move.
