UEFI Required to Use AMD RX 9070

AMD has introduced the new generation RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT graphics cards. However, a UEFI-supported motherboard will be required to use these cards. According to the company’s statement, all graphics cards released in the RX 9000 series and later will be “only UEFI-supported”. This may create some difficulties for gamers using Windows 10 and with old BIOS systems.

UEFI Required to Use AMD RX 9070

AMD RX 9070 and UEFI Requirement

Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) is a more modern system that replaces traditional BIOS and is usually found on motherboards less than 10 years old. UEFI offers advantages such as faster boot times, better security features, and large-capacity disk support. However, for users with older motherboards, this requirement can make it difficult to switch to RX 9070 graphics cards.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 operating system also requires UEFI support, and therefore many users have already switched to the UEFI system. However, according to Steam user data, more than 40% of gamers are still using Windows 10, and some prefer older BIOS systems. AMD’s decision may cause performance and compatibility issues for users with older systems.

Although AMD stated in its statement that the RX 9070 can work on older BIOS systems or in UEFI’s Compatibility Support Module (CSM) mode, performance is not guaranteed in these cases. In other words, users who want to get the full benefit of the RX 9070 graphics card will need to switch to a UEFI-supported motherboard.

This situation brings another problem for Windows 10 users. Microsoft will completely end support for Windows 10 in eight months. Therefore, switching to UEFI is now inevitable in terms of both operating system and hardware compatibility. AMD’s RX 9070 graphics cards promise powerful performance, but this UEFI requirement may pose an additional cost or upgrade need for gamers using older systems.
