Wartorn: A Fantasy Tactical Game From BioShock Designer

Paul Hellquist, co-founder of Stray Kite Studios and lead designer of BioShock, has announced his new game Wartorn. The real-time tactics roguelite game set in a fantasy world takes players to the war-torn Talaur Isles. Planned to be released for early access on PC in spring 2025, Wartorn aims to offer players a strategic depth and story-driven experience.

What Awaits Players in Wartorn?

Wartorn follows two elven sisters, Yara and Elani, as they struggle to survive in the chaotic world of the Talaur Isles. Players will gather a variety of fantasy creatures, including goblins, demons, tree folk, and more, to form a Caravan. Strategically organizing the squad before battle, using abilities carefully, and correctly placing units are among the game’s core mechanics. However, be careful; losses will cause a morale drop, and if all hope is lost, the game will end.

The game’s combat system stands out with its element-based mechanics and environmental destruction features. For example, elements such as electricity spreading over water or tar combined with fire will add a different dimension to battles. In addition, thanks to the slowdown feature, players will be able to give precise commands even in complex situations.

Wartorn draws attention not only with its combat mechanics, but also with its strong storytelling. Players will encounter different events and have to make difficult decisions in each new trial. Ethical dilemmas such as who should be saved and who should be fed will strengthen the dramatic aspect of the game.

Stray Kite Studios plans to offer a wide range of units, missions, biomes and upgrades in the early access version. New content will continue to be added throughout the full development process for Wartorn, which will be available on Steam and the Epic Games Store. This new production from the creators of games such as BioShock and Borderlands 2 has already created great excitement.
