Work Begins on Mass Effect 5
BioWare, which has been silent for a long time, has begun a restructuring for Mass Effect 5 after large-scale layoffs. According to the company’s official announcement, senior technical artists are being sought for the new game. This step, taken after the turmoil experienced after Dragon Age: The Veilguard, is interpreted as a promising development for the future of the Mass Effect series.
Mass Effect 5 Development Process Officially Started
Mass Effect 5 has become one of the main projects BioWare has focused on during the restructuring process. The game is headed by experienced name Michael Gamble, who has been working at BioWare since the second game in the series. Gamble announced that new team members are being sought for the project with a job posting he shared on social media and used the phrase “Let’s build the future of Mass Effect together.” According to the posting, the studio is looking for a senior technical artist with eight years of experience.
This development is quite remarkable on the BioWare front, because after the layoffs in February, the studio’s employee count had fallen below 100. However, a few years ago, BioWare’s employee count was over 200. The dissatisfaction experienced especially after Dragon Age: The Veilguard led to major changes in the creative team. While the game’s creative director John Epler moved to another EA studio, Full Circle, important names from the scriptwriting team such as Mary Kirby and Lukas Kristjanson parted ways.
These developments brought to the agenda the cultural differences between the Dragon Age and Mass Effect teams. According to former Dragon Age writer David Gaider, there was no harmony between these two projects in the studio. For this reason, BioWare’s strategy of adding new names from outside to the team for Mass Effect 5 is considered a logical step in terms of the project gaining a more consistent structure.
Details about the new Mass Effect game are currently quite limited. However, according to some clues shared at previous N7 Day events, the game is expected to feature the beloved character Liara T’Soni. It is also thought that some connections to the criticized Mass Effect: Andromeda universe may be found in this new production. Although official information is limited, the start of the recruitment process is a strong sign that the game is in active development.
