Xbox Hasn’t Had a GOTY Nomination Since 2010
Xbox has been reignited because it has long been unable to secure a spot on the Game of the Year stage. Why Is Xbox Lagging in GOTY Nominations?
Xbox’s absence from the GOTY stage has been confirmed once again by a list compiled by TheGamer. According to sources, the nominations published by Nick Marseil show that PlayStation has competed with 15 exclusive games and Nintendo with 12 since 2013, while Xbox has no nominations. This situation reinforces criticism of Xbox’s content strategy and highlights why player expectations haven’t been met.
According to the report, the last time Xbox received a nomination was before The Game Awards even began. Halo: Reach and Mass Effect 2 made the list during the Spike Video Game Awards, but this success has never been repeated since 2010. Sources emphasize that Xbox has been unable to establish a consistent presence in the exclusive game segment, despite significant brand investments, particularly in the last decade.
This year’s Game Awards nomination list didn’t shift the tables in Xbox’s favor either. According to the announced list, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Donkey Kong Bananza, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, and Hades 2 will be competing. On the Xbox side, there are no exclusive games in the race. This further fuels discussions about Xbox’s “high-budget but delayed” projects.
According to sources, a majority of gamers believe Xbox, despite its robust hardware and service model, is lagging behind in exclusive game production. Despite the success of Xbox Game Pass, competing with the brand-building exclusives of Sony and Nintendo remains an unresolved challenge for Xbox. Regardless of the TGA 2025 results, the view that Xbox’s exclusive game strategy needs a significant transformation is gaining increasing support.
