Xbox Made a Record Payment to Make Stalker 2 Exclusive
Xbox is back in the spotlight with its limited-time exclusive deal for Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl. Statements shared by the game’s developer indicate that Microsoft’s support for the project is far greater than anticipated. While the exact amount of the deal hasn’t been disclosed, it’s stated that the game managed to cover its development costs before its release.
Xbox Paid More Than Stalker 2’s Development Costs
GSC Game World founder Sergiy Grygorovych spoke about the agreement with Microsoft for Stalker 2’s limited-time exclusive release on Xbox consoles. Grygorovych stated that the company received more from Xbox than the game’s total development costs. This allowed the game to cover all its expenses before its release, making it financially profitable.
The developer stated that Microsoft and Sony are in intense competition to attract gamers. He explained that Microsoft’s strong financial structure allows them to make significant investments in noteworthy projects. Stalker 2 was one of the titles supported under this strategy. The exact cost of the deal was not disclosed, but Grygorovych’s words suggest the payment may have been significantly above industry standards.
It was reported that the viewership of the Stalker 2 trailer was a decisive factor in Xbox’s interest in the project. According to Grygorovych, Microsoft representatives contacted the development team quickly after noticing the intense interest in the trailer. The documents between the parties were prepared in about a week, and the agreement process was much shorter than expected.
Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl was released on November 20, 2024, for Xbox Series X/S and PC. The game sold over 3 million copies in its first five months, and the total number of players exceeded 6 million. Following the expiration of its one-year exclusive deal, the game also arrived on PlayStation 5 on November 20, 2025. The payment made by Xbox significantly reduced GSC Game World’s development risk, but did not completely rule out the game’s release on other platforms.
