22 Years of Lost GTA 3 Content Returns Thanks to Modders

GTA 3 is one of those games where players continue to discover new details despite the many years that have passed. The Ghost City area, created for the game’s opening scene but inaccessible through normal means, was once accessible thanks to an old mod. Completely lost when the website shut down, the mod was recreated 22 years later through the efforts of a community member.

GTA 3 Ghost City Mod Becomes Playable Again

Ghost City, used in GTA 3’s opening scene, consists of a small, unfinished group of buildings located outside Liberty City. Because the area was designed solely for the cutscene, there was no collision system in the buildings or on the roads. Rockstar placed the area outside the map, assuming players couldn’t reach it, but it was discovered by players flying in a Dodo aircraft at a specific angle.

Players previously had to venture off-map through an open space known as “Blue Hell” to reach the area. In 2004, mod developer Eilano86 created a road and bridge that provided direct access to Ghost City. This work became so well-known that even Rockstar praised the mod in a 2012 post, highlighting its ability to allow players to reach the hidden city by vehicle.

However, the original files were completely lost when the website hosting the mod shut down. Because a downloadable version couldn’t be found even in online archives, the work was considered lost game content for a long time. Players who wanted to reach Ghost City again had to resort to using difficult methods like the Dodo plane, gravity cheats, or tanks.

A developer named Mod_Saver recreated the bridge mod from scratch by examining an old video from 2012. Moreover, he not only restored the road but also created missing collision files, making the entire island intact and playable. Thus, players can now navigate the streets of Ghost City without falling below the map after crossing the bridge. A 22-year-old lost mod for GTA 3 has become accessible again thanks to community efforts to preserve it.
