BioShock Movie Filming Continues With One Important Change
During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, producer Roy Lee provided an important update on Netflix’s adaptation of the iconic video game BioShock, which will be directed by Francis Lawrence. Lee revealed that the movie is being reimagined with a reduced budget and a more personal perspective.
New Direction for BioShock Movie
The BioShock movie adaptation was first announced in 2022 as a collaboration between Netflix and the game’s developers 2K and Take-Two Interactive. In the first BioShock game, we were immersed in a sunken city called Rapture, a refuge for those seeking freedom from societal norms and government control, created by industrialist Andrew Ryan in the 1940s.
Since the film was first announced, Dan Lin has taken over from Scott Stuber as Netflix’s chief film officer. Lin has shifted Netflix’s strategy towards a more measured approach, focusing on smaller-scale projects and lowering budgets instead of large, expensive productions.
Those who have played BioShock know that Rapture offers a rich story and deep backstory. So, while the budget reduction is a bit of a concern, Lee stated that these changes will be judged on a similar metric to the movie’s box office success, and depending on the number of viewers, producers will be incentivized to attract more viewers. This new approach creates uncertainty about how it will affect the content and atmosphere of the movie.
