In an interview, Christopher Nolan answered “at least” to the question of whether his next film would come approximately three years after The Odyssey. This statement reveals that the director’s new project is not expected to be released in theaters before 2029. Nolan has not yet revealed whether he is working on a script or has chosen a specific genre for the new film.
The three-year wait aligns with the director’s recent habits. Interstellar was released in 2014, Dunkirk in 2017, Tenet in 2020, and Oppenheimer in 2023. With The Odyssey’s release in 2026, Nolan has established regular three-year gaps between his last five films. In the early stages of his career, he mostly completed projects one or two years apart.
The demanding production process of The Odyssey also makes the long break before the new film understandable. Nolan undertook special efforts to shoot the entire film with IMAX cameras. His preference for using real locations and practical methods instead of computer effects made the filming both physically and technically exhausting.
Nolan has openly acknowledged that The Odyssey pushed his own resilience and the limits of everyone on the team. While his next project hasn’t been announced yet, his past statement about wanting to make a traditional horror film is noteworthy.
