Sometimes news from the real world can feel like it’s straight out of a game side quest. For Cyberpunk 2077 players, the self-driving car incident in Atlanta was exactly that. Waymo vehicles, used for Uber rides, gathering in a neighborhood and circling in a dead-end street brought to mind the Delamain missions in Night City.
An Incident Like a Cyberpunk 2077 Mission
According to residents of Battleview Drive in Atlanta, self-driving Waymo vehicles have been passing through the neighborhood for some time. Residents say that especially in the mornings, a large number of vehicles enter the dead-end street, and on some days this number can reach up to 50. This situation, which has been ongoing since March, has become more noticeable in recent weeks with the vehicles circling in the same spot.
One resident placed a child safety sign on the road to prevent vehicles from entering the dead-end street. However, eight self-driving cars became stuck in the area, trying to figure out how to turn around. While the incident sounds funny, it’s not exactly entertaining for residents. Families expressed safety concerns due to children going to school in the mornings, pets, and the increasing traffic.
Waymo, in a statement, said it takes community feedback seriously and has corrected the misdirection behavior. The company claims to handle over 500,000 trips per week nationwide and that its service helps reduce traffic injuries. Nevertheless, this incident once again demonstrates that self-driving cars can create unexpected problems as they become more integrated into daily life.
In Cyberpunk 2077’s “Epistrophy” quest chain, players chase after Delamain vehicles that take on different personalities. While the Waymo vehicles in Atlanta don’t have sentient AI characters, the visual similarity didn’t escape players’ notice. Night City’s dark future may not be entirely real yet, but some moments make you feel that world might be closer than we think.
