Deus Ex was a Turning Point for Bethesda

The immersive simulation genre has stood out for years for the freedom it offers players. One of the most important building blocks of this concept was Deus Ex, released in 2000. Its design approach, which didn’t impose a single solution on the player but allowed freedom through various systems, inspired many major RPGs over time. Recent statements from Bethesda clearly show that this influence was no coincidence.

Deus Ex Consciously Inspired Bethesda Games

Bethesda’s studio design director, Emil Pagliarulo, stated in an interview that he was directly influenced by Deus Ex while developing Fallout 3. According to Pagliarulo, his goal was to bring the most “immersive simulation” experience possible to Fallout 3. He particularly emphasized the significant impact the original Deus Ex had on him.

Pagliarulo also shared an anecdote from Deus Ex. He recounted how, while sneaking into what he thought was an empty house, he encountered a maid emerging from around the corner, panicking and searching for a different solution because he didn’t want to kill her. This is an example of the game’s system-driven freedom. The fact that similar moments can occur in Skyrim or Fallout clearly demonstrates how the design DNA is passed on.

Bethesda’s desire to further advance stealth mechanics and system interactions with Fallout 3 after Oblivion is also part of this influence. Pagliarulo notes that developers from Ion Storm and Looking Glass later worked at studios like Arkane Austin, and this design culture spread within the company. This line was further strengthened with titles like Dishonored.

In fact, Raphael Colantonio, one of Arkane’s founders, even considered Skyrim an immersive sim due to the choices and system interactions it offered. Putting all this together, it’s clear that Deus Ex is not just a classic; it’s a turning point that shaped Bethesda’s understanding of modern RPGs.
