EA is shutting down Battlefield 6 Portal Maps
Battlefield 6‘s Portal mode, which allowed players to create their own maps, was noted for its significant freedom. However, this freedom appears to be exceeding its limits. Electronic Arts (EA) recently began sending email warnings to accounts for content imitating Call of Duty maps. After some users created remakes of classic CoD maps like “Shipment,” these maps began to be removed.
Battlefield 6 Portal: No More Call of Duty Inspiration
EA emails stated that users’ accounts contained “inappropriate content referencing third-party products.” The company specifically cited a portal map called “Shipment 2019 edition.” The message stated that such content could violate Battlefield 6’s licensing rights and that future violations could result in account restrictions.
According to EA’s statement, users will be able to continue playing, but accounts may be restricted “temporarily or permanently” in the event of repeated violations. This has resonated widely within the gaming community. Many players have criticized the company’s decision, stating that Battlefield Portal is, at its core, built on “creativity and community creation.”
On the other hand, some consider EA’s move a “necessary measure” to protect its trademark rights. The use of images, map names, or design elements from rival brands like Call of Duty, in particular, within Battlefield 6, has been a gray area regarding licensing.
No official statement has yet been released by EA and Battlefield Studios. It remains unclear whether the company is removing only Call of Duty-inspired maps or all “third-party themed” content in general. This development could also mark a critical turning point for the future of community-created content. Battlefield Portal was initially introduced with the promise of unlimited creativity, but this incident suggests that the boundaries of that promise are now being drawn more clearly.
