Even GTA 6 Developers Don’t Know the Game Entirely

Grand Theft Auto 6 is one of the most anticipated games in the gaming world. However, even many on the development team are unaware of the story and character details. Rockstar’s massive organizational structure forces employees to focus solely on their own areas of responsibility.

Rockstar’s Fragmented Structure Limits Developers

Rockstar developer David O’Reilly revealed that he has been working on GTA 6 for five years but knows almost nothing about the plot. O’Reilly explained that he only knows the game has two main characters and is unaware of any other details. The developer stated that his role is entirely limited to terrain design, and “I just did the terrain,” demonstrating the fragmented nature of the process.

Rockstar has over 2,000 employees. With such a large team, the story and overall vision are solely under the control of senior creative leaders. The team, led by Sam Houser, directs critical details such as GTA 6’s story and character development. Other developers work solely in their own areas of expertise and lack knowledge of the game’s overall direction.

This structure leaves many employees unaware of the game’s progress. While developers are working intensively within their own departments, the release schedule and overall status are known only to upper management. This further exacerbates the uncertainty surrounding GTA 6’s release date.

Although GTA 6 is being developed by a large team, most members of this team have limited knowledge of the game’s story. This reflects Rockstar’s secrecy and mission-focused working model.
